Child support is the court-ordered payment of money from a parent to financially support their child. Child support may include the payment of health care, childcare, and educational expenses.
Child support is calculated in accordance with the Michigan Child Support Formula. During the divorce process, the court must order support in the amount determined by the child support formula unless the court finds that application of the formula would be unjust or inappropriate.
Child support is generally modifiable due to a change of circumstances. These changes could include an increase or decrease in either parent’s income or due to a change in a parenting time schedule.
